The Uttar Pradesh government will soon have a top-class woman IAS officer in its rolls!

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has announced the Civil Services Examination 2022 results. Ishita Kishore has bagged AIR 1 in UPSC CSE result in 2023 while Garima Lohia and Uma Harathi N stood second and third, respectively1.

Women have been dominating the Civil Services Examination in recent years. In fact, six women have secured the first rank in UPSC or Civil Services Examination in the past 12 years, from 2011 to 2022

Women candidates took a significant share of top ranks in the Civil Services Exam 2022.

This is the second year female candidates secured the top three positions in one of India’s most prestigious examinations.

The Civil Services Examination has been an excellent platform for women to showcase their talent and potential. In recent years, women have been dominating the Civil Services Examination. In fact, six women have secured the first rank in UPSC or Civil Services Examination in the past 12 years, from 2011 to 2022.

Ira Singhal was the first woman to top the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 2014.

Ishita Kishore secured an All-India Rank 1 in the Civil Services 2022 final result declared by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) today afternoon. An alumnus of Delhi University’s Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), Kishore completed her Economics Hons undergraduate degree in 2017.

Kishore cleared the UPSC CSE on her third attempt. “I am thrilled to get the first rank. It’s a dream come true for me,” said Kishore.

She expressed gratitude towards her family for continuously encouraging her.

Twenty-six-year-old Kishore’s father was an Air Force officer, and her mother used to teach at a private school. Her elder brother is a lawyer. “She has opted for the Indian Administrative Service, and Uttar Pradesh cadre is her first preference,” she said.

She shares how she used to study for at least eight to nine hours a day to prepare for the examination.

Kishore is also a national-level football player. She informed the media that she would work for women’s empowerment and the upliftment of neglected people. “I am a national-level football player. I participated in the Subroto Cup football tournament in 2012,” she said.

A Greater Noida, Kishore resident qualified for the UPSC CSE with political science and international relations as her optional subject.

Ishita went to Air Force Bal Bharati School, New Delhi and completed her Class 12 in commerce stream with 97.25 per cent. After this, she went on the study at SRCC. 

During graduation, Ishita interned with CRY Foundation, Housing and Urban Development Corporation and GAIL Ltd. 

Meet Garima Lohia, a proud native of Buxar, Bihar, born and bred in a family of entrepreneurs. After graduating from Delhi University’s prestigious Kirori Mal College with a degree in accounting in 2020, Garima’s unwavering determination to excel in the UPSC civil services examinations landed her in the second spot in 2022. Garima credited her family and mentors for their constant support and urged aspiring applicants to stay focused and work hard. According to Garima, preparing for the UPSC prelims requires grit, discipline, and a daily study schedule of 8 to 9 hours. She firmly believes that hard work and perseverance are the epitome of success and promotes the significance of self-help groups in empowering women across Bihar.
